With a forecast calling for a sixty percent chance of rain, many people came prepared (some better than others) for the May commencement program at Foreman Field. As if on cue, the rain started as the processional got under way, but it didn't last long, and the sun even ventured out from behind the clouds later that morning to greet the Class of 1990.

Others receiving honorary doctorates were JoAnn Falletta, music director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and Richard Cheng, president of ECI Systems and Engineering in Virginia Beach.
