A student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers was organized at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary during the 1957-58 school year. This is the first national professional society to be organized on campus. Shown below are the officers: standing (L-R) Ben Liverman, treasurer; Pat Brady, secretary; P. T. Justice, president; and Charles Tulchak, vice-president. Sitting is William Beck, member of the engineering faculty and sponsor of the chapter .

The first official meeting of the Norfolk Branch, VPI Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers was held November 26, 1957. Shown here is William Beck, member of the engineering faculty and sponsor of the chapter, and Mr. J. A. Rives, former student at VPI now associated with the firm of Lublin, McGaughy & Associates, who is the senior contact member between the local student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the national organization.
