On back of photo: "Activities and Personalities, Oct. 5, 1957. Mr. William Seward, Jr. Head of the English Department of the Norfolk Division, was the pullman guest of Mr. Ernest Hemingway, distinguished novelist, on train from New York City to Miami. The photographer who took the picture was Denis Zapluro, Kenya, Game Warden, who was with the Hemingway's when they crashed in the jungle. Mr. Seward and Mr. Hemingway are friends of long standing."

On back of photo: "Activities and Personalities. Spring 1958. Mrs. Marcia Rice Lindemann, Instructor in the English Department of the College, read an original paper "Various Conceptions of the Phoneme" at the Foreign Language Conference which was held at the University of Kentucky April 24-27. Leading linguists and philologists from throughout the United States heard Mrs. Lindemann, a student of classical and modern languages, point out ambiguous terminology in modern linguistics."
