The University Wall project officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony at the corner of 49th street and Hampton Boulevard. Doing the honors are (l-r): Wells Gresham '42, who chaired the "Buy a Brick" campaign, President James V. Koch, and Kay A. Kemper, Vice President for Institutional Advancement. The project calls for building a brick and wrought-iron wall from 49th to 43rd Street, which in essence will be an extension of the Old Williamsburg Wall at the north end of campus. President Koch said the new wall will symbolize a connection between the past and the future at Old Dominion. Approximately 2,200 bricks and 30 10-foot sections were purchased during the campaign, which raised $500,000. Construction on the wall is expected to be completed by the start of the fall 1995 semester.
