The university's Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Award was presented to Dr. Hugo A. Owens of Chesapeake, a member of the dental staff of Portsmouth General Hospital. Owens, also a member of the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors, was honored for his dedication in "making a difference in academic excellence and human rights."

The January 16 ceremony in the Health and Physical Education Building also featured performances by Old Dominion's Ebony Impact gospel choir and Frank Ward, Jr., assistant professor of music.
