A student from the Black Male Culture Club at Alanton Elementary School in Virginia Beach takes his turn at lighting a candle during Old Dominion University's second annual Kwanzaa celebration on December 4, an African-American tradition emphasizing family and communities. The candle-lighting ceremony defines Kwanzaa's seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Old Dominion's Kwanzaa celebration is the largest in Hampton Roads.
