The committee chaired by Virginia S. O'Herron, assistant librarian for public services, meets regularly to plan and develop library services for remote sites. The library distributed 1,000 distance education student handbooks this fall to the libraries of community colleges that serve as Teletechnet sites. The handbooks contain instructions on accessing the University Library catalog and UnCover, acquiring books and articles through interlibrary loan and learning the basics of doing library research. The library also has conducted orientation teleconferences for students, as well as sessions for community college library directors, site directors, and teaching faculty.

Albert C. Liu, assistant librarian, elicits a laugh from Cynthia B. Duncan during his humorous tribute to the former university librarian at a recent going-away party. Duncan, who had been at Old Dominion almost 15 years, retired on August 15 for health reasons. Among those paying tribute to Duncan, who is credited with achieving many "firsts" at the University Library, were Myron S. Henry, provost, former President Joseph M. Marchello and Darwin F. Bostick, associate professor of history. Henry also read letters of commendation from President James V. Koch and former presidents Alfred B. Rollins, Jr. and James L. Bugg, Jr., who were unable to attend.
