Carolyn Hodgson Meyers Rhodes began as an Assistant Professor in the English Department at Old Dominion University (then Old Dominion College) in 1965. During her tenure at Old Dominion University, Dr. Rhodes co-founded the Women's Caucus, worked as the Principal Investigator for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Pilot Grant in Women's Studies, co-founded the Friends of Women's Studies organization, and was a Fulbright Lecturer in both Romania and China. She retired in 1990 but remained active at ODU. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 16, 1925 and died March 24, 2019. Part 2 (of 6 interviews) discusses Dr. Rhodes's experiences as a Fulbright Scholar in Romania and China, including being present at the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations. He was born on February 11, 1897 and died June 9, 1981. This interview is in two parts. The first interview done in 1975 discusses the early history of ODU -- the involvement of Darden and other individuals, community and state response to the college, financial support, former administrators, and transition from college to university status. The second interview in 1978 discusses Darden's background, his impressions of Norfolk throughout the years, his political career, Virginia politics, his thoughts on Billy Prieur and the Byrd political organization, many of the people he dealt with during his political career, and massive resistance. Dean Stanley R(obert) Pliska joined the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary in 1946 as a history professor. He served as Chairman of the Department of Social Studies (1955), first Chairman of the Department of History (1957), Dean of the Evening College (1962), and Dean of the School of General Studies (1970). He was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania on January 8, 1919. Among his interview topics are the University of Virginia extension program, the Social Studies and History departments, the Student Senate, Academic Advising staff, and Honor Council. Dr. S. Eliot Breneiser, an Emeritus professor in the Music Department, was a part of the ODU faculty from 1951-1986. He was born around 1923 in Santa Monica, California and died February 11, 1988. The interview discusses Breneiser's background, the development of the Music Department and its students, Breneiser's role in the Faculty Senate and University Senate, his views on campus unrest in the 1960s, and his involvement in many of the activities of the Music Department, including Opera and Madrigals. David T. Shufflebarger served in various capacities as Assistant to the President for University Relations and Governmental Relations. He was born in Hampton Virginia.
