William A. Velhagen, Jr. a doctoral student in the zoology department at Duke University, operates on a snake to remove her young. Velhagen studied the evolution of snakes through embryonic development with Dr. Alan H. Savitzky, associate professor of biological sciences at Old Dominion University.

Laura Marcucci, a doctoral student majoring in physics, received the Luise Meyer-Schutzmeister Award this spring from the Association for Women in Science Educational Foundation, marking the second straight year that the honor has gone to an Old Dominion student. The Meyer-Schutzmeister Award, a national honor given to an outstanding female student pursuing a doctorate in physics, is named for a former physicist at Argonne National Laboratory who helped perform measurements of gamma rays produced in nuclear reactions and conducted studies of the behavior of nuclei. Marcucci, a native of Italy, will receive her doctorate in physics, based on her work in theoretical nuclear physics at the Jefferson Lab. After graduation, she will return to Pisa.

J. D. Selby-Lucas, a doctoral student in engineering management and Old Dominion University's first industry fellow who is developing models to improve training consistency for Tricon Global Restaurants Inc., which operates Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants worldwide. Selby-Lucas is participating in the Industry Fellows initiative, a new partnership program developed by the College of Engineering and Technology. Under this program, industries provide fellowships to graduate students who in return conduct research on topics of interest to a particular company.
