Virginia first lady Jeannie Baliles cuts the ribbon to open the university's new Center for Reading and Literacy located in the Education Building. Old Dominion is co-sponsoring the center with the Literacy Action Board of South Hampton Roads Inc. and the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach. Witnessing the ceremony are (at right) Dr. Betty H. Yarborough, eminent professor of educational curriculum and instruction, and President Joseph M. Marchello.

A ceremony naming a nature trail at Old Dominion's Blackwater Ecological Preserve in honor of Gisela A. Grimm was held on campus April 20 (no year given). Pictured here with Grimm, are Dr. Myron S. Henry (left), Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Gerald Levy, Professor of Biological Sciences. Grimm holds a degree in horticulture from Temple University. Following her retirement from a successful landscaping firm in Norfolk, Grimm took courses at Old Dominion and has since done volunteer work with the Biological Sciences Department. According to Dr. Lytton J. Musselman, professor of biological sciences, the 85 year old Grimm has been an inspiration to students and faculty alike.

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Lynnhaven-Virginia Beach review the plans for an addition to the Child Study Center with President William B. Spong, Jr. and Dr. Katharine C. Kersey, director of the child study/special education department. The club has pledged $12,500 toward a goal of $200,000 for a Kiwanis Handicapped Classroom in the proposed addition. Under the watchful gaze of Thea Musgrave, soprano Marina Levitt sings a selection from one of the local composer's operas during a program sponsored by the Friends of Women's Studies that took place February 9, 1989. Musgrave, and internationally acclaimed composer, spoke at the program of her musical work. A Norfolk resident, Musgrave received an Honorary Doctorate from Old Dominion in 1979.

Dr. Gary E. Copeland, professor of physics, explains the operation of the department's newest laser to students who were on campus recently for the National Science Foundation-sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. ODU and Norfolk State received a $32,000 grant for the ten week program, which funds fellowships for rising juniors and seniors majoring in physics, engineering, computer science, and mathematics. Dr. R. Lee Kernell, director of the program, said that "one benefit of the program is that it is helpful in recruiting good quality students for graduate study at ODU."

A luncheon honoring scholarship donors and recipients attracted 125 benefactors and students to the campus recently. Pictured are Randi Terry, a winner of the Clair Nesson Academic Honors Scholarship and the Caroline Heath Tunstall-Elizabeth Calvert Page Dabney Scholarship, and Dr. James V.D. Card, professor of English, who supports the Tunstall-Dabney award. Terry is a junior from Virginia Beach. The luncheon was sponsored by the Student Affairs Committee of the Alumni Association in cooperation with the offices of Alumni Relations, Development and Student Financial Aid.

Approximately 400 people attended the grand opening of the Virginia Beach Graduate Center, a joint venture between Old Dominion and Norfolk State Universities. Governor Gerald L. Baliles cut the ribbon at the ceremony and Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Obendorf was on hand to present the official proclamation of opening to ODU President Joseph M. Marchello and NSU President Harrison B. Wilson.

When he's finished with his Trash Basher runs, Powell works as part of the Physical Plant's landscaping division.

Master Sergeant Kerry D. Johnson (right) of the university's Army R.O.T.C. staff is presented the Soldiers Award by Major General James M. Lyle, Commanding General of the Cadet Command. The award, which is given for peacetime heroics, was presented to Johnson for his efforts in rescuing a man trapped in a burning vehicle and administering first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, until emergency medical assistance arrived. The accident occurred on July 23, 1993, when Johnson was en route to Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
