G. William Whitehurst served ODU in the History Department from 1950-1963, and was Dean of Students from 1963-1968. He successfully ran for Congress and served as Representative to Virginia's Second Congressional District from 1968-1987, at which time he returned to ODU to teach in the Political Science Department. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on March 12, 1925. The interview discusses his background, the teaching profession and his techniques, changes in student interests, his involvement during massive resistance, his views on President Webb, his run for Congress, ODU's television programs with WTAR, the student honor system, and student unrest in the 1960s. Mrs. Lida Maddox Outland lived in the neighborhood of Old Dominion University for over 40 years. She is the mother of Jean Outland Chrysler and Nancy Chandler. She was born in Maryland in 1887 and died December 14, 1981. The interview discusses her family and growing up in Maryland at the turn of the century. Edith Reynolds White has been a supporter of Old Dominion University since the 1980s. She took classes, supported the Annual Literary Festival with an endowment and her presence, was involved in the Friends of Women's Studies, among many other things. She was one of the "code girls," breaking Japanese communications to end World War II, was active in the movement to reopen Norfolk's public schools after massive resistance shut them down in 1958, and was active in many arts and community organizations. She is an artist, poet and storyteller. She was born in Passaic, New Jersey on November 4, 1923. The interview discusses Edith White's involvement with Old Dominion University, with code-breaking during World War II, with the school desegregation crisis, and many other contributions. Peter Stephen Barna, Professor Emeritus, served ODU from 1966-1977 as professor in the School of Engineering where he developed laboratories for the growing Engineering program, built the wind tunnel, and conducted research in aerodynamics and mechanical engineering. He was also a NASA consultant. Barna was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1912 and died April 14, 2006. The interview discusses Barna's involvement with the growing Engineering program and his life before ODU: in Hungary, his move to Australia, his service in World War II, his involvement in various projects (air conditioning, heat transfer, wind tunnels, aerodynamics) and inventions (bullet-proof radiator), his impressions of racial unrest in 1963 Alabama, and his impressions of American vs. Australian teaching methods. Debbie Harmison White began working at ODU in 1979 as Assistant Sports Information Director and retired in June 2016 as Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations. She was the first full-time woman sportswriter in the state of Virginia, serving on the staff of The Daily Press in Newport News, Va., from 1974-1977, and in the late 1970s she was one of only three women SID’s in an NCAA Division I institution. Ms. White served as the press moderator at the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four for 19 years, served on 1981 and 1982 United States Olympic Sports Festival media staffs, represented the United States on the media coordination team at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America organization. She was born in West Virginia. In the interview, White discusses her career in journalism and as an administrator in the athletics department at ODU. Albert Teich, Jr., Professor Emeritus, was a student at the Norfolk Division from 1945-47. He joined the faculty and taught in the College of Business from 1957-1992. Teich also was a lawyer, served as a delegate in the Virginia General Assembly from 1972-1974, and a Norfolk Circuit Court Clerk from 1996-2002. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on February 22, 1929 and died in 2006. This interview discusses Teich's days as a student at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, his service in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and his teaching career at Old Dominion University. He discusses his impression of students, faculty, the Webb and Bugg administrations, the Faculty Senate, and the university's Credit Union. Dean E. Vernon Peele, Professor Emeritus, served ODU from 1948-1975 as Assistant Director from 1948-1956, Dean of Instruction from 1956-1966, and Dean of Arts & Sciences from 1966-1975. He was born in South Carolina. After a brief discussion of his background, the interview discusses his recollections of the college from 1948 when he began as Assistant to Dr. Webb until his retirement in 1975. Topics include the reaction of the College of William & Mary to the Norfolk Division's early development, the academic development of the college, and the college's community and military relationships. Charles L. Kaufman served on the Advisory Board of the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary from 1947-1962. He was also a Norfolk lawyer and philanthropist, after whom the Kaufman Mall and Kaufman Hall were named. Kaufman was born on June 1, 1896 and died October 1, 1985. The interview discusses developments in the university, his views of the Webb administration, finances, the separation from William and Mary, and the role ODU played in during massive resistance (end of page 4). Charles Kenneth Sibley earned the Eminent Scholar distinction and served in the Art Department from 1955-1980. He was the first faculty member in the Art Department and also served as its Chair for a time. Sibley was a noted artist in the Tidewater area and elsewhere. He was born in Huntington, West Virginia on December 20, 1921 and died August 13, 2005. In addition to discussing his background as an artist and professor, he talks about the development of the Art Department, from its roots in the basement of the Old Larchmont Elementary School building; the formation of the University Gallery; his views on art students; and art in the Tidewater area. Arthur B. "Bud" Metheny, Athletics Coach Emeritus, served as an athletics coach from 1948-1980. Metheny played professional baseball with the New York Yankees from 1943-1946. Metheny began his 32-year career with Old Dominion in 1948. He served as head baseball coach from 1948-1980, head basketball coach from 1948-1965 and as Athletic Director from 1963-1970. He became ODU's coach with the most wins in baseball and men's basketball. Metheny is enshrined in College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, the William and Mary Hall of Fame and the Tidewater Baseball Hall of Fame. This interview is in two parts. Part 1 of this interview discusses Metheny's days as a student-athlete at the College of William & Mary, his professional baseball career, and his early career as the baseball and men's basketball coach and athletic director at Old Dominion. Part 2 of this interview continues to discuss Metheny's coaching career including upgrading the athletic program, faculty status of coaches, and prominent players that Metheny coached.
